This past weekend, I watched the documentary Free Solo, which was an incredible reminder not only of the amazing things the human body is capable of, but also pushing yourself to test your limits. Now, I’m not suggesting we go free solo climbing – I felt nauseous as I watched in awe and with sweaty palms – rather use this powerful movie as an opportunity to see how often we are challenging ourselves.
As we go about our lives, we can all too easily get caught up in the day to day, never pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones. A challenge can come in any form – from working hard to get that promotion to taking up a new hobby – that pushes you to grow.
Could it be risky? Yes!
Could you fail? Sure, but the most important thing is that you tried and gave it your all.
What’s the last thing that has challenged you?
For me, I recently decided to challenge myself to take up running as a form of self-care and of course exercise, too. Joining a running program to train for a 5K may not seem like a lot for most people, but for someone like me, who has never been a runner nor liked doing it, I saw this as the perfect challenge to not only boost my health, but get me uncomfortable in the best possible way.
Will I tell you soon that I’ll be hoping to run the NYC Marathon? Probably not, but in the meantime I can’t believe I can admit that I’m liking it, as tackling a challenge like this, especially with friends, has been huge for my accountability and consistency. Not to mention that I’m also frankly proud for showing up and not giving up on something that would have been outside my usual routine and abilities.
Here’s hoping whatever challenge speaks to you is one that helps you grow and makes you proud that you attempted something outside of your comfort zone!
