Last year, many of you joined me for a Fast Fashion Free February challenge, where we went without buying any fast fashion the entire month. We all survived and it was great!
It’s a new year, so how about a new challenge that once again involves clothing, accessories and shoes and voting with our dollars?
If you’re like me, you probably love window/online shopping for things we want, but don’t necessarily need, and there are definitely clothes in your closet you don’t wear (enough) that you don’t need to buy any more. Plus, you may also have a strong desire to cut back on all.the.stuff.
In an effort to be more eco-conscious and also be more strategic about what I am buying and ensuring my purchases matter, I’ve decided to make this a No Shop Winter.
So, what does that mean?
I’m going to try – keyword is try – to not shop outside of my closet this entire winter. But if I need to, here are the rules that I have come up with for myself (not necessarily for the rest of my family).
No Shop Winter Rules:
- I can only buy to replace items that need replacing (i.e. too worn/ripped)
- Before I buy, I will look to replace an item with, ideally, a high quality staple, not fast fashion, to invest in long-term wear and use
- Prioritize purchasing from a sustainable brand and/or a certified B Corp, who aligns with my values, and choose natural fabrics (think cotton, linen, wool, etc.)
- Look into buying second-hand, if applicable – whether that is ThredUp or even a Facebook group – or renting, if that’s an option
Who’s up for joining me for a No Shop Winter?
While I’d love for this No Shop challenge to last all of 2020, being realistic is key and I am reminding myself and everyone in our Living Cleaner, Easier & Safer community that big changes don’t necessarily happen overnight.
So, here’s to better utilizing what we have and voting with our dollars, while trying to be as sustainable as possible! Then, we can then evaluate our progress with spring’s arrival 🙂
