Meal Delivery Services FTW

Do you regularly use meal delivery services?

I remember trying Blue Apron many years ago after they launched, which was great, but a bit too time consuming with a new baby at home.

Fast forward to now – which just so happens to be the perfect time – when I coincidentally happened to try two new meal delivery services, Purple Carrot and Sun Basket.

Purple Carrot is entirely plant-based meals, which I was particularly excited to try, and Sun Basket offers easily customizable, organic and responsibly sourced meat and veggie meals (that caters to many diets) that made it perfect for our house (well, me and my husband).

The variety of meals we got to choose from and try were great – from Sun Basket we had: black bean and yellow squash toastadas with soft cooked eggs, pork piccata with lemon-caper sauce and sauteed zucchini, steak salad with zucchini and red pepper vinaigrette; and from Purple Carrot: jackfruit tacos, sweet and sour seitan and potato malai kofta.

So, what was the verdict after trying six meals?

Pros:

• We loved trying new things (and remembering things we weren’t so fond about – I’m looking at your seitan) and the convenience was key, especially as we are limiting our time outside the house buying groceries.
• It was wonderful to switch up our usual meals with such high quality, clean recipes, and feel like we were going out for dinner many times a week.
• It was awesome having leftovers for lunch/the following night’s dinner.

Cons:

• I forgot how labor and time intensive these meals can be – and they would be too much during normal weekdays – but being at home together made this a bit easier.
• The amount of plastic waste was a bit much, although Purple Carrot touted how a meal kit is typically a smaller carbon footprint than store-bought kits.
• These meals are definitely on the pricier side, but the quality, convenience and variety justifies it although don’t see myself doing this on the regular!

Overall, these meal deliveries were nothing short of perfect at a time like this and I will definitely be utilizing them more – in fact I already got another Purple Carrot delivery this week!
