ICYMI, Sunday’s New York Times’ featured a powerful, eye-opening opinion piece from Nicholas Kristof about the true low blow effects of endocrine disruptors and our actions not only on our own health but also future generations.
It’s definitely worth the less than five minute read to take it all in and reconsider what you may or may not be doing and what impact your actions may have. Little changes add up over time and this piece underwrites the importance and need for more research and stricter regulation/laws in place to protect our health.
Below are some simple, practical steps from Mt. Sinai epidemiologist Shanna H. Swan to take now to help protect yourself, your family and friends – these are great reminders that we’ve touched a lot upon, but sometimes you need to keep hearing them until changes are made:
- Store food in glass containers, not plastic.
- Above all, don’t microwave foods in plastic or with plastic wrap on top.
- Avoid pesticides.
- Buy organic produce if possible.
- Avoid tobacco or marijuana.
- Use a cotton or linen shower curtain, not one made of vinyl.
- Don’t use air fresheners.
- Prevent dust buildup.
- Vet consumer products you use with an online guide like that of the Environmental Working Group.
These alarming finds and warnings are not the reason I started using and then joining Beautycounter to share our safer products and the need for safer products for all but also the reason I started my Living Cleaner, Easier & Safer social media channels, communities and this blog as well – together, I truly believe that we can do better and help one another make better, more informed decisions for our own health and our planet, too.
