You may find yourself spring cleaning various areas of your house, but have you done a spring cleaning of your skin care routine and makeup bag?
Now is the perfect time to prioritize your health and switch to cleaner, safer products. Remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint, so start with products you use the most and/or are running low on.
First, check your ingredient labels to ensure no potentially harmful ingredients may be lurking in your products – say NO to parabens, fragrance, phthalates, PEGs, SLSs and formaldehyde to name a few. Here is a great reference list about ingredients to avoid and also the EWG’s Skin Deep database (or their app) for a deeper dive into ingredient safety.
Then, check your product expiration dates, as expired products will be less effective and can also lead to irritation and possibly even infections (as some could be contaminated with bacteria). Also, toss those cosmetics that have been lurking in your makeup bag for too long. Need a quick reference as to how often you should replace your makeup?
- Mascara: every three months
- Liquid eyeliner: every three-six months (longer for pencils)
- Lipsticks and lip glosses: every year
- Foundations and powder blushes and eye shadows: typically last one-two years
Next, have you checked your sunscreen supply to ensure you have enough for the coming months and that any opened products haven’t expired? My cleaner favorites are these non-nano zinc oxide, lightweight mineral Countersun lotions, which are safer for you and our oceans.
Finally, does your skin may need a pick-me-up after the winter? My recommended go-tos are our All Bright C Serum and Overnight Resurfacing Peel, as together they will reveal a brighter, healthier looking complexion and help reduce the appearance of existing sun and/age spots.
Happy spring cleaning!
