Striking a Healthy Halloween Balance

The single digit countdown is on and the Halloween excitement continues to grow and grow.

I love the joy this holiday brings to kids and adults alike, with all the costumes, food and fun. Don’t get me wrong, I hate so much of the crap that’s out there, all that Halloween candy loaded with artificial dyes and BS ingredients. But, I also believe in enjoying these moments and that delicious candy (well a lot tastes good, ha), so I don’t want anyone, especially my kids, to feel guilt or shame that they’d want to sneak around such foods.

Instead, we focus on balance – making sure we load up on healthy foods to counteract all the Halloween sugar – and in the teachable moments that come with holidays like:

-Realizing what foods make us feel good and how we hate that feeling when we overindulge

-Reading labels and finding better alternatives that still taste good

-Understanding we don’t need all that candy, so we’ll keep some, trade the rest for healthier options/a little gift and donate to troops or local organizations in need

While I personally don’t give candy out to trick-or-treaters who come to our house (team pretzels here!), I do ensure we have safer and cleaner swaps for the kids to enjoy now and throughout the year – some favorites include Made Good bars, Justin’s cups and Yum Earth candies. They’re family favorites, satisfy our sweet tooth and don’t disappoint!
