Happy unofficial start to summer and if you too live in the Northeast, it’s warming up and now is the perfect reminder to ensure sun safety is a priority!
I’ll admit it, I’m a sucker for the Environmental Working Group guides, especially their annual Sunscreen Guide – I like not only knowing ingredient ratings for the products I’m using, but which products make the cut, as I always love finding better, safer options. Not only does ingredient safety matter but also what type of sunscreen you’re using as well!
As you shop for sunscreen, choose mineral sunscreens that safely and effectively offer broad spectrum protection from UVA and UVA rays. Look for products made with (non-nano) zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, rather than ingredients like oxybenzone, which penetrates the skin and acts like a hormone disruptor (among other possible health issues).
Also, with so many different SPF numbers out there, choose a sunscreen with an SPF between 15 and 50, as a higher SPF does not equate to higher protection. Did you know that SPF 30 blocks nearly 97% of UVB radiation, SPF 50 blocks about 98%, and SPF 100 blocks about 99%?
Minimal differences, so IMHO, prioritize ingredients and what kind of sunscreen you’re buying. A few of my favorites to protect yourself in the sun are our Beautycounter Countersun line, Badger and Babo Botanicals – these are all kid-friendly, work well and go on easily, too (although some a bit better than others)!
And don’t forget, re-application is just as important as choosing the right sunscreen! Set those timers for every two hours (or less if you’ve been in the water), stay safe and have fun in the sun!
