Safer Outerwear Shopping Tips

My kids rocking their new, safer H&M raincoats

Shopping for clothes can feel overwhelming, right?

From finding the proper fit and colors to correct sizing and fabrics, don’t get me started on sourcing safer products, too.

When I say safer, I mean finding brands that steer clear of and don’t use unsafe chemicals on their clothing.

For example, shopping for outwear that doesn’t have DWR (dirt and water repellent), as that is usually made with fluorocarbons aka forever chemicals that are released in the environment when washed/worn and may be harmful to our health.

Now when shopping for kids, investing in better options sometimes means spending $$$, which can be hard to stomach when they may grow out of such clothing so quickly.

Thankfully, some fast fashion retailers like H&M and Zara have better, fluorocarbon-free options, so it’s a win-win – yes, I said a win-win for fast fashion! H&M and Zara’s outerwear options won’t break the bank, are still stylish and will help reduce your potential exposure to these chemicals.

Small changes add up, so read the product descriptions carefully, reach out to retailers with any questions regarding finishes, etc. and vote with your wallet for better options. These actions will reduce the risk of and potential release of these chemical compounds that are not only harmful to the environment, but also our health, and hopefully push more retailers to follow suit with safer formulations!
