While it may not feel like the unofficial start to summer here in NJ, yet, as, we have had multiple 90°+ days here this week to now have rainy and cool weather heading into the holiday weekend. Crazy, right?! But it is Memorial Day weekend, so cue another PSA about sun safety.
Enjoying all the benefits of the sun and staying safe is key here, so it’s no better time than now for the Environmental Working Group to release their 2026 Sunscreen Guide. Yes, I’m a sucker for EWG round-ups because I like not only knowing ingredient ratings for my go-to products and also staying informed as to what other better brands are out there as well as what may have made the cut.
When shopping for sunscreen, opt for mineral vs. chemical-based sunscreens that safely and effectively offer broad spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays. Look for products made with (non-nano) zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, rather than ingredients like oxybenzone, which penetrates the skin and acts like a hormone disruptor (among other possible health and safety concerns).
With endless options out there and so many boosting super high SPF protection numbers, does it matter? Yes, but pay attemtion, as many times when brands market SPF 70 – 100+, these numbers may be inflated without actually improving protection. According to the EWG, the “difference is minimal at best – SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays, which cause the skin to burn, while SPF 100 blocks 99%.”
So, don’t be fooled, as all too often, these high SPF numbers can give a false sense of security. Prioritize voting with your wallet for mineral sunscreens made with better ingredients. Our sunscreen go-tos are Counter Beauty and Supergoop mineral SPF and be extra focused and diligent about reapplication, especially when you’re out during peak times of 10am – 2pm, if you can’t avoid being out then. Set timers for every two hours or less if you’re been swimming or sweating a lot.
Being outside and soaking up the sun’s rays is so good for you, so here’s to staying protected while having fun in the sun!
